The Pawn
The 16 a side orthodox pieces retain the same movement rules as in Orthodox Chess except for the pawns which have an initial 1, 2 or 3 step move. En passant is also extended to allow for pawn capturing pawn behind the 2nd & 3rd step moves.
For the pawn, this initial 3 step move is allowed to imitate the fast movement of Viking berserkers into the fray. Pawn promotion at either 11th or 2nd rank gives rise to an additional queen or other court piece, that pawn can also be promoted to a jarl by movement to his own side of the board, but only if there is any empty jarl square within the court rank to facilitate this promotion (A11 or J11 for black, A2 or J2 for white). Otherwise the promoting pawn goes off the board.
