The possibility of 8 directions of movement enables the longship to travel onto alternate coloured squares at every turn, thereby allowing it to reach any square eventually e.g.
The longship above started from A12, moved to C9, finally to E6. Success lay in surprise, its drawback was its vulnerability to nearside threats.
